Hooray! Everyone is done with school and summer has begun. Summer is a great time to recharge and celebrate your accomplishments from the previous year. It can be so easy to get carried away in relaxing summer days while taking a break from school. But what happens when your student enters the classroom in the fall? Studies show that students lose a surprising amount of knowledge during their summer vacation.

How much learning is lost during the Summer months?
The term coined “Summer Learning Loss” has been in multiple studies. Although it makes sense that when students are not actively engaged in learning they will not retain information, the results may be surprising to you. The National Summer Learning Association states that most students lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical computation over the summer months. Results have also shown that students tend to score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than at the beginning.

Here are some simple solutions to prevent Summer Learning Loss:
Read! Summer reading lists for all grade levels, while sometimes provided by the school, can be found onlineThese lists give students suggestions for new and exciting books on their grade level so reading comprehension is retained and even improved.
Practice math! A few minutes of math flashcards each day is a quick way to ensure students retain their basic facts.
Discover! Take a family trip to a local museum (Perot Museum of Nature and Science) or art gallery (Dallas Museum of Art). Places like these tend to have guided tours or educational resources. This is a fun way to get your child’s brain moving and for them to work on their observation and note-taking skills.

Another great way for students to retain their knowledge and begin to move on to material for their next grade level is by enrolling for the summer at The Tutoring Center, Flower Mound.

So what exactly happens during Summer tutoring?
Summer enrollment at The Tutoring Center does three things:
  • Helps students retain the knowledge that they have gained over the school year.
  • Helps students prepare for the next school year.
  • Allows students to get ahead.

While during the school year it makes perfect sense to enroll students in tutoring, it is equally important for them to be enrolled in the summer. During your child’s summer enrollment at The Tutoring Center, he/she will be exposed to next year’s material. This preview of new concepts each week will allow the students enrolled for the summer to pull ahead of their peers. Their confidence will also grow because they are extra prepared for the coming school year.
